30 years of Maycroft Lloyd Loom

Maycroft’s association with Lloyd Loom began in the early 1990s, when Ian Pruchniewicz and his late wife, Susan, discovered Lloyd Loom furniture at the January Furniture Show at the NEC while sourcing products for their newly opened Maycroft Furnishings store in Gomersal, West Yorkshire. This introduction marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to the Lloyd Loom brand.

The launch of Maycroft’s first website in 1997 significantly expanded the business’s reach, generating nationwide demand and enabling the introduction of a broader Lloyd Loom range, supported by targeted online promotions.

Following Susan’s death in 2007, Ian closed the retail shop and focused on developing the Lloyd Loom business. However, concerns from Lloyd Loom of Spalding regarding online-only retailing led Maycroft to open a dedicated Lloyd Loom showroom in Gomersal in 2009. Sales grew steadily in the years that followed.

In 2013, anticipating the need to protect the Lloyd Loom reputation and expand service offerings, Maycroft invested in Moorend Works in Cleckheaton to establish a professional spraying and restoration facility, with storage for up to 500 pieces. Much of the early work involved correcting quality issues arising from Lloyd Loom of Spalding’s final years, following cost-cutting measures and the loss of skilled staff. Lloyd Loom of Spalding subsequently entered liquidation in 2016.

An attempt to re-establish UK manufacturing through Lloyd Loom Manufacturing, led by former Spalding staff and supported by Maycroft, ultimately proved unsustainable due to high production costs. The Lloyd Loom Manufacturing domain name was later acquired by Maycroft.

In 2024, the Maycroft showroom was consolidated and relocated to Moorend Works, bringing all operations under one roof. Today, Maycroft offers a comprehensive range of new Lloyd Loom designs, manufactured in a high-quality Indonesian facility using traditional looms established by the original Spalding founder, with all finishing undertaken to order in the UK.

Lloyd Loom furniture—crafted from twisted paper with a wire core rather than wicker—has endured in millions of UK homes since the 1920s. Many pieces, now valued as family heirlooms, benefit from professional repair, repainting and upholstery services, all of which Maycroft provides. The same applies to the extensive use of Lloyd Loom furniture within the hospitality sector, where refurbishment extends product life and reduces unnecessary waste.

Maycroft is proud to restore Lloyd Loom furniture from past generations while supplying new pieces for generations to come.
